Just after the pandemic, our clients bought this terraced house in one of the most sought after streets of Stoke Newington. The house was full of potential, but in need of a lot of work to turn it into a beautiful home for the family they wanted to build.

Through a long and complex planning process, we finally obtained permission to build a mansard extension, a wrap around extension on the lower level and add a room on top of the existing outrigger.

The house was going to be organised on four levels, so we planned it to give space and privacy to each of the different areas. The lower level became the communal space, for the family to come together and to host. To accommodate the different stages of a growing family life, we planned a large space with a central kitchen area, a spacious dining area at the rear and a more flexible space for the kids to play or hang around when a bit older.

A separate sung room with TV allows everyone to be 'close' even when engaged in different activities.

The ground floor was designed to be a 'service floor', a buffer between the common areas and private rooms. This floor has a pilates room, a study and a cloakroom/laundry room.

Upstairs are all the bedrooms and bathrooms for the family, an oasis of peace.

One of the priorities, and biggest challenge in the project, was to ensure that the house felt bright and airy, despite the increase in volume and the orientation of the property. We introduced large glazed areas in the roof in strategic places, increasing the amount of natural light but avoiding overheating.

In addition, the interior finishes helped lighten up the spaces with soft hues that enhance the light in a soft way.
