Future House is a house for the future in all its terms. When the clients, who I had known for many years, approached us to help them design their new home, it was clear that they were both looking for a new home for the long term and therefore a house, that will be future proof.

They coined the name Future House while talking to their kids about the new home they will be moving in, and it seemed perfectly fitting.

This terraced house in North London had been owned by the same family for many decades and had recently been left to itself. It held a lot of history, buried in layers of tiles and wallpaper, and although structurally very sound, it needed a complete renovation.

We worked very closely with a wonderful group of professionals to bring the vision to reality. We demolished the old conservatory and stripped out all the areas of the building that hadn’t retained any historical value. The fabric of the building was upgraded completely upgraded, internal insulation added to external walls, floor voids insulated, and all windows replaced with highly efficient double glazing at the front and triple glazing everywhere else. The house’s energy supply was replaced from gas to completely electrical, powered by an air source heat pump and photovoltaic panels.

At the same time, we wanted to make the best use of natural light to reduce the need for electrical light, despite the rear of the property facing North, so we introduced large glazing areas at critical points to capture as much light as possible.

The house was extended at the rear and side to house the kitchen and dining areas, and in the roof to form a study, a guest bedroom and bathroom.

Internally we worked to bring everything together while retaining a subtle but clear distinction between the old and new areas of the house, particularly through the use of materials.

We worked very closely with the clients on all aspects of the interior design as well, from the selection of all finishes to the fittings and fitted furniture, to ensure that everything would come together in harmony.

Mark made Work turned all our fitted furniture dreams into reality with the most beautiful details, and the guys at Wilder Landascapes turned every green space into a wonderful oasis where to play, relax and enjoy the fruits of hard work.
